MEET THE GRAY GHOST

Bonefish are one of the most prized gamefish in the Florida Keys—and one of the hardest to see coming.

Nicknamed the “gray ghost,” their silver coloring allows them to nearly disappear against the shallow flats. Spotting one is only the beginning. Bonefish are incredibly wary, quick to spook and capable of blistering runs once hooked.

That combination of stealth, speed and challenge has made bonefishing in Islamorada a bucket-list experience for anglers from around the world.

WHY ISLAMORADA FOR BONEFISHING?

Islamorada has a long history as one of the legendary destinations for bonefishing in the Florida Keys. Its shallow flats, clear water and expansive backcountry create the perfect setting for sight fishing.

But bonefishing here isn’t about pulling up to a spot and waiting for a bite. Tides, wind, sunlight, water temperature and fish movement can change the game from one day—or one hour—to the next.

Capt. Taylor uses those conditions to determine where to look for fish, quietly working the flats and positioning anglers when an opportunity appears.

Bonefish can be targeted with both fly and spinning tackle, making the experience accessible to first-time bonefish anglers while still offering the technical challenge experienced flats fishermen come to Islamorada for.

CONSERVATION IN MIND

Bonefish are more than an incredible gamefish—they’re an important part of the Florida Keys flats fishery.

Every bonefish we catch is handled with care and released with the goal of sending it back to the flats strong.

Protecting these fish and the waters they call home helps preserve the bonefishing experience that has made Islamorada legendary for generations of anglers.

Catch. Respect. Release.

WHY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR IS GREAT FOR BONEFISHING IN ISLAMORADA

Bonefish can be caught year-round in Islamorada, but the transition from summer into fall brings a special window on the flats.

As weather patterns begin to change, so do the conditions we look for when targeting bonefish. Shifts in wind, water temperature, tides and daily weather patterns can influence where fish are moving and feeding, creating new opportunities to sight fish the shallow flats around Islamorada.

Every time of year brings different conditions and opportunities, but this transition is one of our favorite times to get on the water!

For anglers planning a Florida Keys fishing trip this time of year, a dedicated 4-hour bonefishing charter is an opportunity to experience one of Islamorada’s most iconic fisheries when conditions can really come together.
